Homepage for Thomas J. Lasley II

Welcome to my homepage.  I've been at the University of Dayton  since 1983.  During that time, I have served as a faculty member, a department chair, and currently am serving as Dean of the School of Education and Allied Professions.

I teach courses at all levels, undergraduate through doctoral, but most of my work now is with students in the Ph.D program.  The doctoral course I  typically teach is one that focuses on school cultures and how those cultures are influenced by social and political realities.  I also teach a course on models of teaching, which is a master's level course.  That course looks at different ways of presenting content to foster enhanced student learning.

I've authored or co-authored books that deal with the content of both courses that I teach.  For the doctoral course, the text is Teaching Peace , which was published by Bergin & Garvey in 1994.  For the models of teaching course, the text is Strategies for Teaching in a Diverse Society , which was published by Wadsworth in 1997. A second edition of that text was released in 2002.  The title of the second edition was changed to Instructional Models:  Strategies for Teaching in a Diverse Society. I co-authored a book  on teaching, which was published  by McGraw-Hill in 2000, which is titled  Strategies for Effective Teaching . A new edition of that text will be released in 2003.  And, I am now working on a book for Allyn and Bacon that will focus on teaching in secondary schools.

During the past year I have authored or co-authored publications that have appeared in a number of professional periodicals including, for example, Education Week, Education and Urban Society and The Educational Forum.

My most significant service involvement at the present time includes serving on the Governor's Commission for Teaching Success, which is a statewide commission that examines teacher quality.  I serve on the Teacher Support and Professional Development Committee of the Commission.  I'm Past-President of the Dayton Council on World Affairs (DCOWA), which is a regional organization that focuses on enhanced public understanding of political events on an international scale, and Past-President of the Project 30 Alliance, which is a national reform initiative focused on teacher education. I am also on several local community service boards, including the  Boonshoft Museum of Discovery.
