Dred Scott v. Sandford (1857): Supreme Court held that blacks could not become citizens nor were they entitled to the rights and priveleges of citizenship. Also ruled that the Missouri Compromise was unconstitutional. The case failed to resolve the slavery issue and thus contributed to the eventual Civil War. This decision, in part, necessitated the 14th amendment to the Constitution.
