Ruritanian Election Districts
Ruritania's eleven electoral districts are briefly described:
District 1: NE
Shanorewni
District 1 encompasses the central city and northeastern industrial,
working class suburbs of Shanorewni. While Shanorewni is still a relatively
small capital by European standards, the northeaster nsuburbs have grown
haphazardly over the last 30 years. Although it lags far behind its Scandinavian
neighbors, some industrialization has occured. Since the factories have
been owned by a relatively small number of people, with a great deal of
support from the former monarchy, working conditions have been poor and
the resulting living conditions are often thought to be "worse than the
temporay shack towns of the wandering north peoples".
District 2: Southwest
Shanorewni
District 2 encompasses the wealthy and middle-class (still very small)
suburbs of Shanorewni. The wealthy suburbs include many fine homes as well
as apartment blocks that are quite costly since many wealthy Ruritanians
prefer to own an expensive apartment and a couple of homes either in the
countryside or in the south of France. It is a mixture of quite different
people--bankers, indiustrialists, students and academics (Ruritanian National
University is located on the edge of the city with many living in these
suburbs).
District 3: E.
Mittlelund
District 3 is a combination of forested countryside and small farms.
It is often considered to be "the spiritual heart of Ruritania". Many people
live a very traditional life here (either permanently, or on a weekend
and/or summer basis). The Ruritanian Church is very strong here as is a
tradition of non-inheriting male heirs entering the Ruritanian military.
Some fear that the new industrialization will forever alter the "special
character" of this part of the country and that small-scale industrialization
could alter its character since it is close enough to the capital and accessible
via transportation links.
District 4: Vingolund
Similar to District 3 only more densely populated. It has a lot
of Ruritanians of partial Swedish heritage. It has always been viewed as
a renegade region and its peoples' attitudes surprisingly similar to the
Swedes in their emphasis upon communal solidarity.
District 5: Svenskalund
Area heavily populated with ethnic Swedes who share much in common
with District 4 people. Since Argoheim is a city based upon the processing
of petroleum from Northern Ruritania, there is also a strong working class
constituency here.
District 6: North
Ingoslund
Rural Northern Ingoslund is virtually the "breadbasket" of Ruritania.
It produces much of the agricultural produce which the country consumes
(and sometimes exports when harvests are good). There is a large itinerant
population here who perform the grueling work associated with farm harvesting.
There are some beautful large-scale farms and a large number of grubby
shanty towns that house itinerant workers. Also see discussion of Ingoslunders
in District 7.
District 7: South
Ingoslund
South Ingoslund is a region bordering on the industrial city of
Valtala. It is a mixture of small farms and wealthy suburbs. The area has
a "chip on its shoulder" since it is often the target of many jokes among
Ruritanians. The Ingoslunders are generally considered to be country bumpkinesque--slow
witted and not very urbane.
District 8: Valtala
Valtala and its inner suburbs comprise District 8. It is a heavily
indistrialized area with a tradition of a strong and active underground
Communist Party. Since the Communist Party now operates as a legal party
in Ruritania, Valtala has become the "home" of the party.
District 9: Agerlund
Pondala is the capital city of Agerlund, the major coal producing
area of Ruritania. There is a strong labor and working class bent to the
area although once you get out of the Pondala area, the land is farmed
in small plots by a large peasant population. There have been periodic
skirmishes between peasants and coal miners over the years as strip mining
has replaced traditional underground mining in the region.
District 10: Muntanlund
The central mountain area of Ruritania is a mixture of rigorous
mountain people and small ski resorts with ski chalets owned by the wealthy.
It is a land of immense natural beauty and the people in the area are strong
environmentalists.
District 11: Laklund
The vast territory with huge potential oil reserves is currently
the home for Ruritania's nomadic population who follow the reindeer herds.
The towns of Ardlund and Grosenheim on either side of Lak Lulea are the
only "outposts" of any size in this region.
