Agerlund

Coal Production Near Pondala

Agerlund's main economic activity is the mining and processing of coal. This industry, once the basis for great wealth in the area, has fallen upon hard times since oil has been discovered in northern Ruritania. The mine workers' union continues to be strong even as the number of mine workers has dramatically decreased over the past two decades.

Brief Description

Agerlund is Ruritania's Election District #9. The eastern two-thirds of the district are dominated by small and medium-sized farms while the western third of the district abutting the Federistten Mountains is Ruritania's coal producing area. Agerlund is an area in transition. The large city of Podala has always depended on coal for much of its wealth and power. The discovery thirty years ago of the vast oil fields under the frozen tundra of northern Ruritania has dramatically affected Pondala's workers. In an effort to extract as much coal as possible as quickly as possibly, coal companies have seriously strip mined vast areas. The runoff has begun to affect rivers which have been the water supply for the farms in the eastern two-thirds of the district. There has thus been great tension between the coal and farming constituencies over the last five years. In fact, one of the final actions causing the downfall of King David III was the sending in of army troops to quell fighting between the two sides.
