We chose to do our science investigation surrounding the topic of seeds. The students learned about seeds through various lessons, and soon developed into seed experts. First, the students looked at seeds in their daily lives. They did this by looking inside various food items to see if they contained seeds. The second week the students investigated the various characteristics of seeds, and looked at seeds very closely. They did this through looking at seeds through magnifying glasses, and explored the inside of a seed. The third week, the students learned about seed dispersal and the different ways in which seeds can travel. They did this through working at various seed dispersal stations (wind, water, and animal). The fourth week, the children learned about the growth process of seeds (germination). They learned this through germinating their seeds by planting seeds into ziploc bags with wet paper towels. Finally, the students learned about how seeds transform into plants and were be able to plant their own seeds they had germinated the week before. We hope the students will continue to care for their plants, and closely watch them grow into big beautiful plants!
This was a very successful investigation unit, and the students were very excited about learning more each day about seeds. The students surprised us many times by taking our lessons further, and always wanted to learn more.
