History 354: Women and Gender in the Middle
East
Paper Prospectus
Due: In class, Oct. 22nd
NOTE: Although this is an ungraded assignment, there will be
a LATE PENALTY of one point per calendar day late taken off the
final paper. So turn this in on time, please.
I. Assignment
Purpose: this prospectus is to facilitate your work on your final
paper by requiring you to present to me your basic subject and what
sources you think you will use. I will then be able to help you by
checking to see if what you have in mind is feasible or on the right track
for the assignment. I can also help you with sources if needs be. You may
end up changing some of the items below; you may modify your research question
or use other sources but for starters, this prospectus will get you thinking
about the project.
II. Instructions
Once you have decided on your paper topic, submit the following:
1) Your topic, which should include a proposed TITLE.
2) The theme you intend to address, WRITTEN IN THE FORMAT OF A QUESTION
or SERIES OF QUESTIONS.
Examples: why did women in Iran begin to organize politically in the
early 20th century? What motivated them to engage in radical actions? Was
the Egyptian feminist movement really feminist? How did women's work in
factories in Lebanon affect their status in their families in the late
nineteenth century?
3) PRELIMINARY AND PARTIAL LIST OF SOURCES YOU PLAN TO USE.
(You may change your mind later but for this prospectus you should present
your ideas on this at this stae.) See the paper assignment
for the final number and kind of sources required. For this prospectus
you should include:
-
one monograph (defined as a book length, scholarly work on a specific
subject)
-
two articles from scholarly journals (not from on-line sources).
-
Note: you will need to use more sources for your paper. Most of
you will be using documents, newspapers, memoirs, literature, and in some
cases, films in your final paper. If you know at this point which of these
kinds of sources you plan to use, include one in addition to the other
three requirements. Also note: the bibliographical requirements for
your paper are not the same as for this prospectus; these ones are partial
and preliminary.
III. Format
-
The prospectus should be one page, TYPED. IF FOR ANY REASON IT IS MORE
THAN ONE PAGE, STAPLE THE PAGES TOGETHER AND NUMBER THEM.
-
Include a title, your name, the name of the course, and the date.
-
Write in complete, grammatically correct sentences.
-
Include your sources at the end, listed in bibliographical style. Click
