History 354: Writing a Précis

General Instructions

Description: these précis consist of a summary of one of the articles or book chapters assigned in the course reading. You may choose any four except chapters of the "texts" - i.e., Guity and Tucker or Leila Ahmed's Women and Gender in Islam.

You are to hand in four of these throughout the semester. The last one is due Apr. 18th. Any handed in after that date will not count toward your grade. Each is worth 25 points.

A. Format

1. Length: each précis should be at least one page, and preferably not much longer.
2. Include the following on each:
- Your name, date, and the course number
- The name of the author, the title of the work, properly cited (i.e., books underlined or italicized, articles in quotations, journals - when you have the cite - underlined or italicized.) With articles or chapters from books, include the page numbers.
3. Typed, double-spaced. No e-mail submissions, please.
B. Content should include the following:
1. What type of reading/source this is: i.e., an article from a book or journal, a document, a memoir, etc.
2. The "the essential facts of the work:" i.e., a concise statement of the author's argument and a brief description of the kinds of sources the author uses. (The latter requires looking at the notes. How can you describe the sources if you don't look to see what they are, right?)
