Communication Concentration Requirements

 

In the Department of Communication there is only one major – Communication.  Within that major there are four concentrations.  The four concentrations are:

 

Communication Management

Public Relations

Journalism

Electronic Media

 

All Communication majors – regardless of their concentration – take four common courses.  Those four common courses are:

 

Communication Modules (CMM 110, CMM 111 or CMM 112, and CMM 113)

CMM 201 – Foundations of Mass Communication

CMM 202 – Foundations of Communication Theory & Research

CMM 330 – Media Writing

 

Students in the Journalism concentration must take the following 4 courses:

 

CMM 331 – Feature Writing

CMM 430 – Copyediting

CMM 431 – Public Affairs Reporting

CMM 432 – The Law and News Media

 

Students in the Journalism concentration must take 2 of the following 8 courses:

 

CMM 332 – Publication Design

CMM 333 – Free-Lance Writing

CMM 334 – Sportswriting

CMM 412 – Statistical Methods in Communication

CMM 414 – Global Communication

CMM 416 – Development of the Mass Media

CMM 439 – Special Topics in Journalism

CMM 498 – Communication Internship

 

 

Students must complete an additional 3 Communication and/or theater courses. 

 

Note:  dance courses will not count toward this requirement.
