Requirement # 14
The cluster requirement is designed to help students engage in a richer and broader learning experience by exploring a particular theme such as “What it means to be human” in a multidisciplinary way. Students complete the cluster requirement by selecting a cluster from the list of clusters below and completing three courses within that cluster. Clusters are part of general education. They are not an additional requirement, but a way of organizing some of the general education requirements into a coherent and meaningful area of study.
The three courses you must complete the cluster have to come from different areas or domains of study. There are six domains of study. The six domains of study are:
Arts Study
Historical Study
Philosophy
Physical and Life Science
Religious Studies
Social Sciences
In short, you must take one class from 3 of the 6 domains of study to complete this thematic cluster requirement.
Currently there are eight formalized clusters to choose from. The eight clusters are:
1. The Arts and Human Experience
2. The Business Professional in a Global Society
3. Catholic Intellectual Tradition
4. Cross Cultural
5. Perspectives on Global Environmental Issues
6. Social Justice
7. Values, Technology, & Society
8. Women and Culture
In addition, students can work with their advisor to create their own cluster.
To help you decide which cluster interests you the most, please consult the cluster selection matrix below.
