HST 103  FINAL EXAM: ESSAY AND IDENTIFICATION QUESTIONS

THERE WILL BE NO MAKE-UP EXAMS REGARDLESS OF CAUSE
BRING A BLUE BOOK AND PEN TO CLASS

The FINAL EXAM will consist of two parts.  Part I is the Identification section.  Part II is the essay. 

PART I--IDENTIFICATIONSTHIS SECTION WILL BE COMPLETED IN CLASS DURING THE EXAM PERIOD.
 
Part I of the exam will be very similar to the midterm exam.  From the following list of 10 major concepts/terms I will create short answer and fill-in-the-blank questions.


Industrialization Enlightenment 
World War I Scientific Revolution
World War II
Nationalism 
American Revolution Imperialism 1870s-1914
Social Darwinism Conquest of the Americas (Cortez, Spain, etc.)

PART II--ESSAY:  THIS SECTION WILL BE COMPLETED AS A TAKE-HOME ESSAY.  YOU WILL SUBMIT YOUR ESSAY IN PAPER FORM DURING THE EXAM PERIOD AND YOU ALSO MUST HAVE SUBMITTED THE ESSAY ONLINE IN TURNITIN.COM BY THE DAY OF THE IN-CLASS EXAM.

Please answer the following question in a well-developed essay of about 4 pages.

During the course of this semester we have examined part of the long history of globalization -- the construction of commercial, transportation and communications networks that link people from a variety of human traditions.

        --Using Edible History of Humanity as a centerpiece in your discussion, write a reflective essay in which you explain what YOU think have been some of the most important results of globalization in the last 500 years (For example, was it the encouter of Europe and the Americas in 1500?  The American Revolution?  The Slave Trade?  Industrialization and Imperialism?  The World Wars?  Post WWII?  ETC., ETC., ETC.  Be sure to limit your response so that you can discuss adequately.  Finally, in the conclusion, explain how a global perspective on the past has changed your understanding of the basic Humanities Base question, "What does it mean to be human?"  

 
Taking Examinations

Thorough preparation is the key to success on all examinations. During the test you can't get help working that problem you skipped over in your math assignment!

Preparation is also important because your time might be limited. If you are not thoroughly familiar with the material, you will run out of time. Third, solid preparation is necessary because you will have to analyze and apply material. You might be asked to compare two concepts covered in different chapters or in different lectures weeks apart. Review the study hints described earlier in this section to prepare yourself for exams.

Essay Exams

Essays require a comprehensive understanding of large amounts of information and an ability to integrate this knowledge into a coherent essay. Simple memorization of unrelated facts will do you little good. You will be asked about fundamental ideas from the lectures, the readings, and the discussions.
