NOTE ON ACADEMIC DISHONESTY:
-
"Plagiarism consists of any of the following: quoting directly from any
source of material--including other students' work and materials purchased
from research consultants-- without appropriately citing the source and
identifying the quoted material; knowingly citing an incorrect source,
using ideas (i.e., material other than information that is common knowledge)
from any source of material--including other students' work and materials
purchased from research consultants-- without citing the source and identifying
the borrowed material" (Student Handbook, p. 42). Plagiarism will
result in a grade of "F" for the course and possible disciplinary action
by the university.
WRITTEN WORK GUIDELINES:
CITATIONS:
Chicago Manual of Style
-
All paper assignments must be typed, double-spaced, and either laser or
near-letter quality printed. All margins must be no greater than one inch.
Select a 12 point font size (this is the normal size for most word processing
programs).
-
All paper assignments should be organized presentations. Each paper should
be guided by a concrete, readily identifiable thesis statement. The body
of your paper should then demonstrate this thesis with concrete evidence
(examples) from your sources.
-
Quotes, paraphrases, bibliographic entries, and other evidence should be
cited according to the guidelines listed in The
Chicago Manual of Style. MLA and other
systems are not acceptable.
-
Pages must be numbered.
-
Your paper must have the following information: your name; date and semester;
the course number and title; and my name. This will help me grade your
work anonymously and also assist in the event that the paper becomes lost.
-
When using a computer, save your work often as you write. This will protect
you in the event that the computer or network crashes.
-
Always make a photocopy of your paper before you turn it in to me. Do not
simply rely on your computer disk!
-
All papers must observe accepted standards of English grammar. Misspellings,
typos, incomplete or run-on sentences, and other technical errors all detract
from your argument. Proofread, proofread, and proofread again! Spelling
and sentence structure count!
-
Papers with more than one error per page will be marked down at least a
full letter grade. Keep in mind that effective writing is one of the most
important life skills you will learn in college!
