HST 103  TERM PAPER PROPOSAL/PAPER INSTRUCTIONS

TERM PAPER PROPOSAL

On the due date you must hand in a term paper proposal (1 typed page maximum) with the following parts:

1.  Preliminary Title of Project (should include the title of the document; ie. "The Expansion of the British Empire:  'A Journal of Captain Cook's Last Voyage'")

2.  Brief paragraph explaining what the document is about, what you hope to learn, and how you will place the document within its historical context.  In other words, what do you think is the context of the paper?

3.  Bibliography containing AT LEAST 3-6 PRINTED sources--meaning published material.  One or two additional web resources are also acceptable for your own background information.

TERM PAPER

Each student will write a 7 to 10 page research paper focusing on some important aspect the West and the World through a concrete historical analysis of ONE PRIMARY DOCUMENT of your selection (documents linked to the webpage, in the Europeans in the World reader or in the textbook.

WHAT THE PAPER SHOULD DO:
1.  Introduce the document and general time period to the reader.
2.  Place the document in its historical context:  when/where created, by whom, for what purpose, why, etc.
3.  Analyze the document and how it attempted to address its particular problems/issues, etc.
4.  Evaluate both the SHORT and LONG term consequences of the document (if any).
 

There are four primary goals in this project:

1.)  To explore a topic in detail
2.)  To build basic research, analysis, and communication skills.
3.)  To explore historical concepts.
4.)  To build confidence in using, analyzing, and building resources as part of the educational experience of history students.
