    THURSDAY:  

    Forced to flee Chile after the military coup in 1973, Ariel Dorfman has focused his writing on the trials of tyranny and exile. This program looks at how he has fought for human rights as a novelist, playwright, essayist, journalist, and professor of literature and Latin American studies. Many of the works of this multi-genre author are examined, including Death and the Maiden, his successful play which was turned into an international film by Academy Award-winning director Roman Polanski.     General Augusto Pinochet seized power in a military coup. He banned political parties, closed newspapers and spread fear throughout the country. (2000)

    This program profiles cases of Iranian-sponsored terrorism via the Hezbollah and the PLO as well as Argentina's dirty war, when the government used terror tactics against its own people. U.S.-backed insurgency in Nicaragua via the Contras is also analyzed. Joseph Kennedy II; Duane Clarridge, former chief of the CIA's Latin American division; and Bayardo Izaba, of the Nicaraguan Center for Human Rights, are spotlighted, as are retired General Martin Balza, former head of Argentina's armed forces; former interrogator H?ctor Vergez; Estela Barnes de Carlotto, president of the Association of Grandmothers of the May Square; and forensic anthropologist Luis Fondebrider, who is committed to identifying remains of the disappeared.     Week 10 (March 22) TUESDAY MARCH 22:  SPECIAL ASSIGNMENT---WE WILL NOT MEET IN THE CLASS

    1--Go to the library and search for 2-3 articles on your term paper topic and and additional 2-3 books.
    2--Discuss with the reference librarian how else you may search for relevant sources--especially primary but secondary as well.
    3--In 1-2 pages write up what additional sources you have found and the results of your conversation with the research librarian.

    WEDNESDAY MARCH 23:  In lieu of a regular class on March 22: 

    The Office of the Dean, College of Arts and Sciences, the Department of History, the Department of Political Sciences, the International Studies Program, and the College Liaison for Global and Intercultural Initiatives are sponsoring a teach-in next week on the recent, tumultuous events in the Middle East and North Africa.  Experts from the Middle East will participate via Skype.

    The event is scheduled for Wednesday, March 23 from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. in Sears Recital Hall. 

    Presented as a panel discussion with audience participation, this teach-in will be moderated by Dr. Margaret Karns, Department of Political Science, and will feature faculty and student expertise on regional developments, global responses, and American and Middle Eastern perspectives. Questions and dialogue between audience and panelists are encouraged. Panelists will include:
