READINGS:

**Required books (available at the bookstore on campus):**

George Brown Tindall and David Shi.  America:  A Narrative History.  New York:  WW Norton, 5th Edition, 1999.

David E. Shi and Holly A. Meyer.  For the Record:  A Documentary History of America.  New York:  WW Norton, 1999.

REQUIREMENTS:

General:

Reading all the assignments by the assigned date, ESPECIALLY THE DOCUMENTS, regular attendance to classes, discussion participation, four document essays/reviews, one final exam.  All students are strongly encouraged to ask questions throughout the lectures, and ACTIVELY PARTICIPATE IN DISCUSSION.  I WILL NOT ACCEPT ANY LATE ASSIGNMENT REGARDLESS OF REASON.

Attendance:

Students are required to attend classes regularly and not miss more than TWO classes.  Remember that the lectures, discussion, and the readings are the core of this course. Therefore, you are expected to attend all classes. Every two class periods missed after the first TWO, for example absences three and four, will result in an automatic one full grade reduction for the final grade. Due dates are cast in stone! There will be no make ups and late assignments will not be accepted. Only in the case of family or personal emergency with prior notification and substantial documentation will I even begin to consider a deviation from this policy.

Course Evaluation
DISCUSSION PARTICIPATION    10%  (50 points)
PAPERS                                       70%  (350 points)
FINAL EXAM                               20%  (100 points)

Students can earn a maximum of 500 points throughout the semester. The grading scale is:
450-500 points = 90-100% = A
400-449 points = 80-89% =   B
350-399 points = 70-79% =   C
