Laytonville Quarry, California

This quarry is famous in some mineralogy circles because of the presence of deerite, howieite, and zussmanite. Indeed, it is the type locality of zussmanite.

I visited the quarry May 31, 2000. Here are some digital photographs of our visit. Note: they range in size from 300 to 400 K and are unprocessed - they look OK on my computer screen but YMMV. You may have to scroll to see all of the photo.

An overview of the quarry outcrop.

A layer with a prominent dark brown/black mineral, probably stilpnomelane. I have now looked at this under the microscope.

        Wavy layers.

Tremolite rind above pale brown mineral layer.

View of the upper quarry bench, northern edge.

Steel blue-gray amphibole schist. Above the penny: a folded garnet-rich layer.

nicely crystallized grains of pyrite in amphibole schist.

Boudinage of layers in quarry wall.

Why I wanted to go on vacation in northern California.
