      Objectives
This course is separate from the
GEO 115 lecture, but I strongly recommend that you take both courses. Geology majors are required to take both courses. In this course you will have much hands-on experience with rocks, minerals, maps, and so on. By the end of this course, you will: comprehend the basic tenets of geology and how geologists work; appreciate the geology and geologic processes surrounding you; be able to apply your knowledge by solving problems, and evaluate the factors affecting the earth's past, present, and future.

      Evaluation
Each lab session will have activities and exercises that must be completed and written up. There will be a short pre-lab exercise that will prepare you for the lab. It must be completed before lab and turned in or checked at the beginning of the lab session. There will be an exam in which you identify hand specimen of rocks. There will be a quiz at the beginning of almost every lab to evaluate whether you have learned and retained the material.

      Pre-labs 10% of your grade
      Lab write-ups 60 %
      Rock exam 15 %
      Quizzes 15 %

      Attendance
You are expected to attend all lab sessions. There will be no makeup lab times except for students with legitimate reasons for missing class. There will be no makeup lab quizzes. Attendance will be taken daily. Arriving late to class is distracting to students and professor and will be counted as an absence. Do not schedule medical appointments that conflict with the class schedule. A written medical excuse must be submitted if you cannot attend class due to illness. Do not purchase tickets for transportation that conflict with official school days.
