Opens: March 29. Closes: April 19
I have a booklet on Marine reserves that you are welcome to read.
The lab starts at: http://www.jason.org/digital_labs/CINMS/
Focus Questions:
What is a marine reserve and how does it differ from a marine sanctuary?
How is the value of an ecosystem or species measured?
The sea around Anacapa Island
is one of the most biologically rich and economically important areas of the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary and National Park. Because Anacapa Island is close to mainland harbors, it is a very popular place to fish and dive. In this simulation, you have been asked to represent one of the stakeholders in a working group to establish new marine reserve areas near Anacapa. You must develop a plan that will satisfy the group you are representing yet be acceptable to the other groups' representatives.
The mission of your project is: To protect, maintain, restore and enhance living marine resources through new management strategies that encompass an ecosystem perspective and promote collaboration between competing interests.
Choose well. The fate of the sea near Anacapa Island and the people who live off that sea is in your hands!
Click on "Enter the simulation".
1. Who are the people involved? Move a puzzle piece over. Note: you have to place it in the correct position! A small window pops up with a statement.
The groups involved are:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
Now you have to choose a role. Click on the "Now choose your stakeholder role" button.
2. Your marine reserve should perform what duties?
Click on the next "choose your stakeholder role" button. Next window: Cartoons of the different people involved. Choose any role you like - they are not gender or race specific.
3. What are some of the boundary conditions (so to speak) - what do scientists say? What will business people accept?
Now you can learn more about Marine Reserves and the stakeholders, OR explore Anacapa Island. You will need to do both before you create your own reserve.
Choose to: "Learn more about marine reserves and the stakeholders".
Next page: Click on "More about the people".
4. Fill in the attached (on your handout) table with a SUMMARY of each stakeholders's info. Don't copy every word.
5. For your role: What else would you like to know more about before formulating a plan?
Next: Click on "More about the Place".
6. What is "The challenge"?
7. Reserves and biodiversity: What is the connection between reserves and biodiversity?
8. What is "Serial depletion"?
9. Marine reserves working group: What is the past history of this group? (be short)
Explore Anacapa Island
Instructions: The Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary covers many square miles. Use this geographic information system (GIS) to familarize yourself with Anacapa Island. Can you identify the most important areas for your stakeholder group? (These will vary, depending on which role you chose). Close this small window.
The map shows long skinny Anacapa Island, and white ocean, gridded into squares. A copy of this will be used to create your own reserve.
Under map layers: Click on the different options to see which areas are used or of interest to different groups. You might want to make note of these squares! YouÕll need this info under "Create your own reserve". The "Prepare your presentation" button leads you to a link where you can highlight certain squares, and print our your map. This is not required here.
After you have explored the information available, click on the puzzle piece "Choose your role" on the bar above. Choose a different role and different information will become available to you. Try this out to see the full range of info, and where all these people are coming from. Also: no one group has access to all the information.
Done exploring? Create your reserve.
Create your reserve instructions
10. Your job: conserve ecosystems while minimizing the impact of the people YOU represent and other stakeholders. Also:
Protect at least ___% of the area
Protect areas of medium to high conservation value
Have a total economic impact less than ___%
Not have impact of more than ___% on any one industry
Read the information on the arrows going around this window. Then close the instruction window.
11. Click on squares to include them in the reserve. Watch your conservation numbers, total area, and economic impact numbers go up.
There is no one correct answer - in fact there may not be a choice that includes 30 % of the area, has limited economic impact, and pleases everyone. What is your compromise?
12. On the attached map: highlight the squares you have chosen to be in the Marine Reserve. Also note below other information:
Current size of reserve: _______ Percentage of area: ______
Conservation value: ______________
Economic Impact: Squid _____% Kelp _____ % Recreational fishing ______%
Is there a solution that meets all the criteria and pleases everyone? Why or why not?
Back to our focus Questions.
13. What is a marine reserve and how does it differ from a marine sanctuary?
14. How is the value of an ecosystem or species measured?
