    gem Meetings

    November 10, 2009: at 7:00 PM at the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery. Presentation: Fluorescent Minerals and how to collect/display

    This monthÕs presentation is on Fluorescent Minerals. Do you think some of your calcites may fluoresce? Jeff Fisher will bring his blacklight and you can test them yourself.
    Jeff also requests suggestions for topics for next yearÕs meetings. Elections: All current officers have agreed to run again. (See above for list of officers). However, if anyone would like to volunteer for a position, please contact Pat Westby (lapidary13@aol.com). Elections will also be discussed at the November meeting.
    December party: Jeff Fisher will update us about the planned celebration at the Brixx Ice Co. Restaurant, 500 E 1st St in Dayton. All information, including maps and parking info, will be included in the December Rock Chatter. I f anyone has suggestions for activities at the party, such as gift exchanges, door prizes, etc., please contact Pat Westby (lapidary13 at aol.com ) or Jeff Fisher (jeff-fisher at sbcglobal.net).

    News: with the closing of Riverbend Art Center, the DGMS has had to find a new meeting place. The Dayton Gem & Mineral Society Meeting begins at 7:00 PM (new time!) at the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery. Address: 2600 Deweese Parkway, Dayton Ohio. phone 937-275-7431. Someone will be at the main door to direct you the meeting room.

    Field Trip News

    We have no field trips scheduled at this time.
    Unless otherwise posted, field trips are open to paid Dayton Gem and Mineral Society members with MSHA certification. We will be collecting the DGMS $5.00 field trip fee, per member, at the quarry.
    Please have the MSHA Certs with you and all Safety Gear: glasses, hard hats, steel toed shoes. Bring any other items that you need such as other tools, drinks, snacks, etc.

    All of our members are enthusiasts of the natural world. Some collect minerals or fossils, or both. Some polish, facet, and mount their own gems. One teaches this skill. One member is associated with a local university. One member is a recognized specialist in micro-mounting.
