Phl 340 / Hms 410.  Freedom and Determinism. Class #4.    T. Jan. 18

Dr. Percio Castro,  On the film Pixote and inner freedom.

Background:  19th century naturalism in literature

Emile Zola's influence:  concern for poverty, religious fanaticism, social conflict, adultery, prostitution, racism, political corruption, xenophobia, worker's rights, women's struggles.

Social determinism as a theme.

Arthur Schopenhauer (1788-1860):  an outline of forms of freedom
physical freedom -  absence of material contraints
intellectual freedom -- no intellectual impairment
moral freedom -- absence of motivational hindrances "free choice"

Challenges to these definitions?
Different possible intepretations of how much freedom Pixote had?
Social situation and experience limit power to think and choose?

Relation to rest of course:
The story of Pixote provides a test case of what "freedom" actually is.
