Dr. Peter B. Nelson

Political Science Professor and
Director, Master's Program in Public Administration

Personal Information:

I was raised in Miami, Florida and graduated from Florida State University (GO 'NOLES!!).  I was commissioned an Infantry officer in the U.S. Army and spent almost two years as a Company Commander in Germany.  Following active duty, my military affiliation continued, first as a member of the Florida National Guard, and later as an Army Reservist until I retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1996.

In 1972, I entered Florida International University where I earned a second bachelor's degree, this time in Hotel-Restaurant Management. I worked for ARA Services, a contract food service provider and eventually became the Director of Food Service Operations at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Fl.  I returned to Florida International and earned a Master's degree in Public Administration in 1975, and in 1976, began work on my Ph.D. at the University of Mississippi. I began teaching at UD in 1979.

I am married to Carmen, the Director of the Child Care Center for the Dayton Public Schools, and we have three children, Marc (29), Ryan (27) and Catherine (21).  We are active in Corpus Christi Catholic Church in the Five Oaks neighborhood of Dayton.

I am an avid golfer (anytime, anywhere) and hold a private pilot's license.
