Comments, I was just passing through the neighborhood, and thought I'd put my two cents in. I totally agree with your ideas on affirmative action. I thank God for the programs that were so instrumental to minorities in the 60's and 70's. If you didn't have them, many Blacks, and Hispanics would've been excluded from schools, housing, voting, etc., etc., etc. You know why affirmative action and quotas? Because of the inherently evil nature of man: If man could be trusted, you could have an ideal society, where skin color didn't matter in anything. But because you can't, you need to leave those quotas and programs RIGHT WHERE THEY ARE! Sadly, you won't find that time coming any time soon, if ever. So what are you left with :puppets like Ward Connerly, who become a Black mouthpiece for all the Whites out there who were just looking for someone like that to help perpetuate their junk. The bottom line is this: if the Whites like Bakke in 1975, want anybody to blame why they can't get into Medical School, or Law School, or whatever school, they can blame all those Whites who let the devil use them in time past, who would picket children from getting into schools, and don't think they're good enough to get into the Augusta Country Club other than being a caddie, or have to make sure they dotted every "I", or crossed every "T" to be able to vote, if they had that chance. THESE, AND THE PEOPLE THEY SEE IN THE MIRROR EVERY DAY ARE THE ONES RESPONSIBLE! NOBODY ELSE! THAT'S RIGHT, THEY CAN BLAME THEMSELVES FOR THE MESS THEY'RE IN RIGHT NOW! So they can just come off it, and get right, and THAT will be the best step in the right direction. God forever and richly bless you one, and all.

Comments, Kudos on a superb web site that offers an educational opportunity for ALL to help "bridge" the gap (of hatred, fear, envy, distrust, ignorance and insecurity) between white and black Americans. I authored a book, titled "iN tHE cAR" (http://www.inthecar.com) which clearly documents one of California's most racist institutions - the California Department of Corrections (CDC). Inside this institution, one will find a sub-culture of deviants (most of whom wear uniforms and badges who have the audacity to call themselves "peace" officers! Yes, that "Child Development Center" (CDC) manufactures and sustains a working environment that is openly hostile to all peoples of color -- especially, black Americans! Read iN tHE cAR to gain a personal and close up look a typical(?) American institution that reeks with racism!

Comments, I am studying English at Cyril Jackson Senior Campus. We are learning about feature film and the film we are studying is Misssissipi Burning. We were asked to find information on racism in Mississipi in the 60's. I have'nt found 'exactly' what I'm looking for but found this site very informative nonetheless. Thank you.

Comments, It was a good page but it could be more information on more racism and creed cause when it is time for us to do reports and things it is hard to find stuff to say without getting to up tight. When we as African-Americans we have more of a proble explaning racism because other cultures have something - to say

I should have signed the guestbook long ago. Thank you for maintaining such a academically useful and politically progressive web site! I'm a freelance researcher/writer/editor and am also working on my dissertation "Brain Trouble: A Psychohistory of Whiteness." I'm also an activist. All of these roles require access to solid information. I'm always looking for scholarly information on the internet and always disappointed that so few sites provide full-text access. Isn't sharing scholarly information the purpose that the internet was orignially created to serve? So, thanks again. The next time I update my web site's resource list, I'll be sure to add a link to you.

I am a Temple University student studying Human Resource and Marketing under Business Administration. I was looking for information about gender discrimination and its affect on women in the workplace. I'm writing a research paper for a Women in Economics summer course that I'm currently taking. I love how your site is designed and I believe that more black women should also have sites on the internet. Your choices of poetry are beautiful and an inspiration to me. I am a black woman. I am also a single mother. My son is 10 months old and at times it is difficult to balance motherhood, school, and work. I believe nothing is by accident and it was a reason why I came across your site among the millions on the net. Keep doing what you're doing. I will definitely visit your site again in the near future.

Thanks for a most informative, educational, and thought provoking website. I appreciate the subject matter elucidate, here. I feel that there are so few people willing to go beyond a surface discussion of racism. Racism, the beast-parent of all pathologies, permeates the core/soul of this nation and its people. Thus, the entire country is degraded by its malevolence. I am wondering how can we save the next generation if we do not begin to save ourselves? (Frenchie Lee)

If you go to a country such as Mexico, Spain, or France and decide to become a resident of that country, you will not be babied in English, and you will not be handed money to raise your kids. Signs will not be written in the native language and English too. If you can't speak in a store, resturaunt or hotel and no one else is willing to help who knows english... you are S.O.L The same should hold true in America.... I pray that the day arrives when we no longer baby our immigrants.

This is an ingenious and well-needed site! As an African-American student studying health law and and health care management, your website is a true and yet sad reminder of the many struggles minorites of color must face in regards to receiving an equal quallity of health care. Well really I would like to tell you about the racism that is going on in Millen GA. Well, at least what happened to me and my friends One Sunday afternoon we were at the State Park (Magnoila Spring) and Yes, I was giving the park rangers hell because they were discriminating upon blacks. The park rangers were letting white people in the pool but, not letting blacks in the pool, so now i am tring to take them to court. Do you think I have a good case . Yours truly: Eric Smith

Vernellia- Hello most kind and gentle sister! I cannot tell you how very pleased I am to have met you. God is good, yes? And funny, too. I tried to get in touch with DST in St. Louis all last week and only got machines. But there you were, bright as they come! I just knew you had a special spirit. I hope your extended trip delivered you safely home. I also hope you have some time to catch your breath before diving back in to the madness of life. Remember this blast from the past? "With these hands, I cannot defile you... they are to lift you, my sister. With these words, I cannot demean you... they are to comfort you, my sister. With this strength, I cannot destroy you... it is to defend you, my sister. With this heart, I cannot reject you... it is to love you, my sister." -Lillian Pierce Benbow Wishing all that is good for you and yours, Casandra

Last week I made a video at the U of MN on Diversity: Our journey together: women's voices on race, class and gender. I am mixed blood, and I am raising a daughter who could pass. I never had the opportunity to attempt to pass, I am Native, French Canadian, Black and possibly Latina- I am currently searching for my father for ethnic proof. Anyway, I found your article on passing, and I remembered how I so strongly stated in the dialogue of my video that passing had a way of hurting me in side. I don't want my daughter to try passing, and I always want her to be proud of everything that she is. I have to admit that I am selfish in the wish to a degree. I don't want her to ever be ashamed of how ethnic her mother looks. I surprise her friends, and her teachers and I listen to them trying hard not to react. I would love to engage in dialogue about passing, from a parents point of view, maybe.

I was disgusted by a recent article of yours entitled," On Obsessions or When Being Black is Not Enough." I felt it was venemous towards the Mixed Race community. As a minority, you should understand the fight your mixed race brothers and sisters have. No one has the right to tell anyone who they should or should not be. That is the problem in the black community, starting back from slavery, in which slave masters placed their mixed offspring into the home as house slaves, and created hatred between mixed and monoracial blacks. There is a movement among mixed people in order for the chains of the one-drop rule to be broken. We have a right to be proud of our mixtures, including black, but we can be as proud of our white or asian or hispanic parents, as we are of our black parents! I am a multiracial mother of a 3/4 white daughter (blond hair, blue eyes, white skin), who is classified as white on her birth certificate. She has that right, just as I do to say what I am and not be ashamed of any part of my heritage! We are not, in your words, foolish children. We do have life experience that tells us to be proud of who we are and not let anyone tell us who or what to be, including you! Racism from blacks and whites have created this! But, more than whites, blacks should be ashamed of being racist toward their mixed brothers and sisters! They know better! I take your statement, "Whatever our ancestry..we should be proud to claim being black," and I say, "Whatever our ancestry..we should be proud of who we are! We are Multi and Bi-Racial Americans and Very Proud Of It! We should look into the faces of our parents who gave us life or our children, and be proud of every drop that runs through their veins and not select one drop (black) and forget about the rest. Because, that is throwing away our parents, our children. That is throwing away our ancestry! Whatever our ancestry has made us who and what we are. And I am Proud to Be Mixed in this nation! I browsed your web site and was very impressed by what I saw. Also, I will be entering law school in the fall of 99' and I was wondering if you could recommend any books that would prepare me for law school/professors/law in general. I suppose I'm a little worried as to what to expect. I have heard horror stories about the teaching styles (Socratic method) and exams. My undergrad major was in the sciences and I minored in English. I think this prepared me to think analyticaly but I've never even opened a law journal or book. I would be open to any suggestions that you may have. Thanks for making such a great website!!!

Dear Madam, It is a great privilege to go through your website. I have not had a lot of teaching about African American history. I went to high school in Nigeria and never took a class in history. When I returned to the United States to continue my education, I discovered a need to learn about African Americans in this country. I especially enjoyed your educational items about the legal system in this country. I really want to be a lawyer and your legal page gave me ample information in regards to law. As far as God and spirituality is concerned, I am a devout christian and your quote on 1 Corinthians 13 was very uplifting to me. I have also reminded myself after reading your poems about African American women that I must be proud of who I am as a woman and as a child of God. Thank you so much for what you have done and may the Good Shephard direct you in all endeavors of your life.

I like this web page! I needed to find a web page on health for this class and I wanted something on Black health. Also, about a couple of weeks ago, a Black student here at Oregon State University was assaulted by a white fraternity on campus. The Black student was walking by the frat and two drunk white males began calling him racial names from a window and began throwing lit firecrackers at him. They came outside to confront the Black male and luckily two guys who were friends of the Black male drove up and ended the fight. This is a campus of over 15,000 students and only 140 Black students. It is difficult dealing with the everyday struggles of racism. Unfortunately we have to and nothing ever gets done about it. The police refused to file any charges against the fraternity or the two white students. Even though the two students were drunk and under-age (they were both freshman) the police still refused to do anything. Even though they threw lit firecrackers out of the window of a frat, the police still refused to do anything. Even though they harassed a student, the police still refused to do anything. All because the victim was Black. Kelva~

you for providing a refreshingly different viewpoint than that which we in law school are so
often exposed to on a daily basis. If there is one point of contention I would make, it is that many of problems which appear to be racial in nature are actually th result of the insidious class bias that is so prevelant among the practioners of the legal profession. Sadly, it is the 23 year old whose family is but a generation or two removed from the backwoods or thetrailer park who is among the most ardent advocate of "pulling up the ladder". Once again, thanks for your committment, and good luck in the future...

I am doing a final term paper on interracial adoption and I am the mother of a son who is biracial. It was very informative reading your paper and I hope to use some of your thoughts and feelings in my paper. I also realize the need that my son has to identify with his black heritage and I am trying to open doors so he will have positive role models to identify with as he grows. Thank you for your honesty .

The idea of a racist society here in America still today is archaic in nature and destructive to us all. You don't have to be off-white to know that. My outrage with individuals who still carry and spread this fear and hatred around has reached a crescendo and has now as a result placed my own life in turmoil. I now find myself in position where the difference between right and wrong have overshadowed my life, making the decision on how much of my life is worth gambling for the sake of my name difficult. I am on a quest for peace for both myself and for those around me and need to make a decision that will affect my wife and my family. I think that a person can be pushed only so far before they will fight back. I found myself in that position and now must gamble a year of my life to defend my actions or accept the consequence that has already been decided for me by one man.

Vernellia, I am a former student of yours, UDSL class of '93. You taught me Torts in my first year. I have stopped at your website a couple of times, there is so much interesting information here. I will come back again when I have more time to read. I am particularly interested in the spiritual matters you write about. I am seeking a greater spirituality in my life now, in large part due to my interest in, and learning about the life of, John Coltrane. Whenever I have the opportunity to visit San Francisco, I visit the Church of Saint John Coltrane, an African Orthodox Church. Please check out their website: http://www.saintjohncoltrane.org/ Perhaps you could provide a link from your site. I am also learning about a (relatively) new faith called the Baha'i Faith and it's foundational principle of Unity. The Baha'i Faith professes the oneness of humanity and is very active in promoting improved race relations. I have met many wonderful and diverse people in the local Baha'i community and imensely enjoy their company. Thanks for providing such a rich and colorful website, I plan to return to learn much more. I would also welcome an exchange of e-mail with you on spiritual and race issues. Thanks, Scott

I read an instructive, albeit brief, article in the most recent "Hispanic" magazine (today is 2 May 1999) about the under-representation of Hispanics in the armed forces, except for being clustered in the lower ranks. The source was a report from the National Council of La Raza, which I surfed my way to via the Net. I then E-mailed NCLR & the article's authors with the available link, and told them about some of the discriminatory treatment I have both witnessed and personally experienced as a US Army officer--indicative of part of the reason that Hispanics don't rise in the military, despite such valued attributes as foreign language skills, knowledge of foreign cultures and proven courage on the battlefield. I suggested that NCLR, perhaps in conjunction with MALDEF, explore researching this in more depth, and perhaps seek action, whether through litigation or other means, to redress current and past grievances along these lines, as well as to do whatever is possible to ensure that future military command climates don't repeat this mode of performance. I'd be interested in swapping stories with any other Hispanic veterans out there, and perhaps encouraging you to pass your stories about discrimination in the armed services on to NCLR & other agencies as I have done, and seeking to address some of these injustices and right some of these wrongs.

As the mother of a pediatrician and mother-in-law of a family practioner, I am also very concerned with the negative image doctors are receiving because of this issue. As my daughter has said many times, the insurance company executives are the only ones who are profiting by managed care. The consumers are still paying higher premiums and the doctors' reimbursements continue to decline each year; unfortunately, most consumers don't realize this.

Comments: Thank you for this site. Life on earth is a racial issue! The human race. We have to quit looking at who to blame for the problems and work together to solve the problems WE ALL face. A small handfull of bankers and government officials are trying to enslave us all. This will succeed as long as we are kept busy pointing our fingers to the past. It is time to look forward with a collective focus and realise the strangle hold that the power and greed of the money people have been using on the sovereign peoples to extinguish our freedom of liberty and property. This is accomplished by being responsible in present time and involved with our surroundings. Look to your Creator and believe in yourself and fellow man. GET INVOLVED in local government, no matter how corrupt, and make sure the decisions they are making for you and your offspring are for your benefit instead of theirs. This is not easy but essential to our survival as peoples. Thank you again for this forum. With Love Acuponi & Tuluaq

This is a terrific site I've had bookmarked for a little under a year now. I'd tried to send e-mails to the previous maintainer, but they always bounced back and now it seems your site has had a face-lift and staff change, yes?

Anyway, I'd very much appreciate an e-mail back to stewart@black-collegiate.com. as I've been wanting to request permission to repost some of the information you've compiled here for a commemoration of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month on my site, Asian American Village. Further, I represent a larger network of minority specific magazines surrounding the Minorities'Job Bank, a diversity recruitment site published by Black Collegiate Services. We are working to establish more-or-less informal, mutually beneficial strategic partnerships with sympathetic websites, link trades, promotions trades, etc. We have a number of benefits to offer non-profit and academic partners (Asian American Village currently has @ 100 partners).

I hope to hear from you soon...and again, terrific site!

I have been writing a research paper on the Japanese-American Internment Camps of WWII and I found your site very useful, and wanted to thank you.  My hesis pertained to racism and how it led to the institution of these camps...being that the anti-Japanese prejudice was eminent in government, commercial industry and American society.  Thank you again for having such an informative site.  I might look into writing a revision of this paper later in college, as now I am only in 11th grade.  Take care. Dear Vernellia,

This is a great site.  I am very interested.  My name is Ben and I am doing a  report on title 9 in my english class.  However I am only reporting on what  affects me.  I am a wrestler at West Springfied HS (Spingfield VA) and it is  very sad to watch so many universities drop their wrestling programs to meet  the quota of title9.  The only article that I really found that helped me was  the one by Laurie Tarkan, Unequal Opportunity; Title IX is Under Attack,  Women's Sports and Fitness, Sptember, 1995, at 25.  It is about how  Congressman Dennis Hastert, and Illinois Republican and former wrestling  coach, is concerned about the universities dropping mens swimming and  wrestling.  It has really helped me ...but i hoped I could get more of a  selection.  It is so hard to find material from my point of view.  Please  keep you eyes open for it.  Ill keep checking your site.  Thanks a lot.

Dear Ms. Randall:

I stumbled on to your web site today and was amazed! First, thank you for the broad array of very useful information you provided. What most impressed me, however, was reading "your story" in the prologue of the Meyers-Briggs article. Thank you for taking the time to tell about your experience because there are folks out there--like me--who can both identify with it and benefit from your experience.

I am a 43 year old African American woman who is going to law school in the fall (University of Oregon). I am both exhilarated and terrified (in equal measure, most days). Like most folks, the idea of going to law school is a bit overwhelming for me and I really didn't know what to expect--until I read a few articles on your site.

So thank you for "keeping on," and know there's a sister in Oregon who you've helped quite a bit.

Dear Vernellia,

Thank you for your well written article. You have obviously put much thought and effort into this study. As a professional in the health care field I disagree with several issues you might want to consider.

1. Racism, as I understand it is a frame of reference a human being adopts which has as it's foundation or premise one's race or a special class or race of people. You seem very much opposed to racism yet very racist at the same time. In light of this definition aren't you a racist?

2. Health care is really a very simple choice made by an individual one person at a time regardless of race, socio-economic factors, etc. What one believes, how one behaves, diet, exercise, fresh water, minerals,
nutrients .... these are the things that determine health care. Interestingly enough most of these issues of life are free and no respector of persons.

3. Sickness/Disease management however is a different story. At any rate for a nominal monthly premium just about anyone can purchase an excellent Hospital-Surgical insurance plan that will pay 100% of all covered expenses at any Hospital and with any Doctor worldwide. Moreover in reading the specifics of the plan there are no special provisions or exclusions  for Whites, Blacks, Irish, German or Asians. It pays 100% for any race!

Perhaps the real issue at hand is not equal access but special access. Respectfully, Thomas L. Yakopin

Editor's Response:
First, Thomas I am not sure why you call me a racist merely because I point out the discrimination and racism that exist  in the Health Care system.  Second, I don't know what kind of health care provider you are, but a person's health status is related to much more than the "simple choices" that person makes.  It is also related to, among other things, access to health care when a person needs it and appropriate treatment.  It is undisputed that minorities have less access to health care than whites AND even when they have access they are treated differently.  Finally, I am not sure what you call nominal monthly premium but even inexpensive insurance cost  anywhere from $150 to $300 per month and such insurance will not cover all necessary medical care.  What is the name of the company, the mailing address, and the telephone number for your so-call insurance? I am sure others would love to know about it. VRR

We must eradicate prejudice of all kinds and educate the naive whites who don't recognize that racism still exists in this nation. Lets recognize that the constitution begins with "We the people,. . ." not we the blacks, we the whites, we the racists, or even we the downtrodden... WE THE PEOPLE.

I am happy discovering your Web-site -- truly a splendid addition to the internet's most erudite discussions on these topics. Something seems to be missing. Your readers may enjoy knowing the U.S. Census reveals our rate of interracial marriages is more than doubling each decade since 1960. Data show currently an astounding 25-60 percent of American-born Asians, Hispanics, and Indians are marrying interracially with White people, almost 10 percent of all babies born of at least one Black parent now has a White parent, and all these trends are increasing. The U.S. Department of Management & Budget is responding by amending the Year 2000 census (next year), for the first time, to allow "Check all that apply," so the children of these racially mixed marriages and other (e.g., pre-Loving, 1967) multiracial people can be accurately counted. For more information on this fastest demographic trend here are a few URLs of interracial marriage\multiracial person\trans-racial adoption Web-sites: Asiaphile's Home Page Association of Multi-Ethnic Americans (AMEA) Biracial World Domination Hapa Issues Forum (HIF) INTERracial Interrace Haven Interracial Voice Multiracial Activist Project R.A.C.E. There is an overwhelming white majority and most of my classmates are very cruel to the few Native American, Hispanic, and African- American children and thier families who live in my town. I am a teacher in a prison of mostly black inmates of a below sixth grade level. I also teach Life Skills and concentrate on teaching them that opression is universal. If a person understands this, then they can make a good life for themselves by thinking for their own benefit and staying out of prison. I use poetry(original) and take religious concepts(sermons), remove God and show that the basic concept is a rule for staying out of prison. I tell it like I believe it but our basis is respect. Each student has the right to completely disagree with me or each other but must respect any person's right to disagree. I also teach them to assume everything that they read, including what I say may be a lie and check it out at the source for themselves. I am not a preacher, my job isn't to convince them about anything but to teach them to think for themselves and their benefit. I seem to be successful and my materials are shared with anyone that is interested. My ideas on racism are different. I grew up in poverty, white, Catholic, and have experienced every kind of discrimination that others complain about. I also teach them how to become millionaires. $200.oo a week, invested at a 10% average return wil grow to a million in about 23 years. You win even if you fail to make your million because you have whatever you have invested. If any interests you, send me a postal address and exactly what you are interested in because I have several hundred of pages of lessons. I have been teaching this group for over 15 years and I generally write a new lesson each day that I am feeling good or inspired. I currently work as an Equal Employment Investigator for the City of San Diego. My interest as well as my work has led me to this Web site. I have always been curious about the human nature aspect of racism i.e.; why people do what they do to each other based on skin color. Another aspect of my curiosity regarding racism stems from working in this field; learning about and implementing legal and moral ways to deal with racism in the work place. I want to thank you for the site, because it is very helpful in my education and application.

Sista,   I am very grateful to the Most High for finding your website! It is most enlightening. I have signed the guest book, and i will spread the word.   My son , who is in the 10th grade,  is doing a research paper on
Racism against African-Americans. Would you advise us of resources that he could use that are grade-appropriate. . . . If you can guide us to resources that he specifically can use we would be extremely grateful.

Ms.Randall,as a 27 yr.old WM,I found your articles on a.a quite one-sided.Did you know that there are black people also opposed to affirmative action? There is.All a.a.does,although its intentions are good, is promote reverse discrimination.Disagree? Get out into the world more.Yes,there are intelligent and hardworking blacks who earn their keep in society but the reason is they actually worked for it.Affirmative action just gives privileges to the lowest common denominator, people who have no desire to do an adequate job because they were hired on their color, not work ability and therefore could care less.Think I'm lying?Go pass by a fast food restaurant sometime.I'm not a racist, just someone who can see both sides of the coin that's all.In fact,an intelligent and hardworking black person is someone who'd I'd associate with before a lazy black person or white person for that matter.Thank you for hearing whitey's side.

I really enjoyed visiting your WebSite. I give administrative support to physicians and researchers in the
healthcare field, and believe me, there is quite a disparity in the delivery of services to minorities. But,
until we stand up and say, "No more," it will only continue. I am grateful to have had the opportunity
to see and experience, firsthand, some of the greatest advances in healthcare of this decade (i.e.,
at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation and University Hospitals of Cleveland). Yet, we still have
a long way to go, and only through reading and researching (educating) for one another can we
somehow break this 'deadly' chain.

Once again, thank you for such a "wonderful" WebSite.

Sincerely,
BJFeagin

I am very disturbed and and angry, by the direction the country is taking in race relations. You can consider me to be an (ABM), angry black male remember how they(Whites) coined the term (AWM). I'm mad at the country for utilizing black males as the poster child and whipping boy for everything that's wrong in Amerika. From affirmative to so-call welfare reform, this laws are not in the interest of the black populace. What's really scary it seems as though there isn't anything to derail the locomitive of hate that is roaring across Amerika. Even we(blacks) utilize the system(systink) they(whites) find whys to usurp blacks from power. Look at the Espy situtation and the nomination of numerous black people to various posts. The question I pose: Will there ever be fairness and justice for the black man? My response now is no, we will never be treated equally in Amerika.

After reading your passage concerning affirmative action, I am moved to reevaluate my own thoughts on the subject. I have often believed that, in some ways, affirmative action has perpetuated the racism in this country. I have not changed that view, however, I do believe that affirmative action has a place. At the University of Texas at Austin Law School, they dropped their affirmative action policy and watched their minority enrollment ( mostly Black and Latino) drop. It is not clear whether or not the motion to discontinue affirmative action had anything to do with this. Or the efeects of the policy change. Affirmative action did what it was intended to do, in getting more minorities into the workforce. However, as one of the points brought up in the conversation, affirmative action was meant to be a temporary fixture. More than thirty years later, it is still in place, and more of a controversy than before. Affirmative action was intended to jumpstart our race to equality and merit. It resembles W.E.B. DuBois' views in the formation of the NAACP. Many companies and universities, use affirmative action as a means of maintaining status quo. This, more than anything it does to help our situation, hurts it. In short, I believe affirmative action is like politics, a necessary evil. But for how long? I enjoyed the conversation. It was at the very least stimulating and eye-opening.

Hi, there! I'm not even a resident in North America, and yet I wanna take one step futher with you than others to make this world a better place to live. I'm against racism, sexism, homophobia, hybridphobia, and agism as well. Even today there is a lot of misunderstanding out there and I doubt why we used to call America a melting pot at all. Wasn't it a mere propaganda of American government? Who knows? White people just seem to consider themselves to be superior to people of color with no proper reason. I'd like to believe human beings are rational enough not to judge any individual by his/her skin color. Sometimes, however, it seems like I expect way too much. Well, let's never stop fighting against those misled and uneducated racists. The day will come with its time unless we give up.

This is a cool website, absolutely bursting with info I need for my Gender and the Law course. However, I need some specific information about the treatment of non-white women in the legal system. Could anyone tell me how to go about finding it? I would really appreciate it. Keep up the amazing work!

Good webpage, but I have one little thing about the guy who provided all the statistics about how much of our nation is white operated. Has he/she forgotten the O.J. Simpson trial? I just recently read the book that Ron Goldman's family wrote and it made me see that most of us souterners aren't the only one's that are racist. I believe that it was Juror #6 (correct me if I'm wrong) that gave the black power sign to O.J. after the verdict was read. That jury was a black majority and that is the ONLY reason why O.J. got off easy. I am doing a report on Racism in America for my English class. I found this webpage and I feel that it will help me greatly with getting more information. Thank you very much. -Anonymous

Thank you for your note. I absolutely agree that there is alot of unnecessary hate and prejudice in this country. And you are right that African Americans are just as prejudice as others. In fact, one of the hallmarks of oppression is that those who have been oppressed often oppress others. The "kicking the cat syndrome", that is if your boss does something to you that you are angry about. . . you can't kick your boss . . .so you kick the cat.
How do we deal with prejudice in this society? We focus on behavior rather than attitude. The
irst step. . . needs to be like an alcoholic anonymous type program. . . admit that you are prejudice and then take one step at a time at working out your prejudice. . AND . . not acting on those prejudice.
of course, I don't know you. . but if you are not prejudice toward anyone, if you don't have ANY opinions that are about groups rather than the individual, you would be the extreme exception, possibly the only person in America.
Anytime a person say. . ."whites. . . this" or "blacks. . .this" or "hispanic . . . this" or "Asian. .
this" that person is stating a prejudice. . .That is, he or she is really stating a perception of the group based on his or her experience (others experiences, or media) with a subset of the group. That perception may or may not be accurate about the group as a whole or even about a large number of the group. That perception is a "prejudice", to the extent that you then ACT on those perception. . . treat people differently your prejudice can move to racism, sexism, anti-semtic, homophobic, etc. . . While not all people are racist. . . all people are prejudice. And like alcoholics, the first step to recovery, is admitting our own prejudices and then taking the steps to correct the prejudice and to NOT on act on those prejudice.
I am sorry about the way your finance's family treats you obviously they haven't worked on their fears and prejudice. All you can do is work on yours.

I am a young hispanic woman that has been primarily raised in an white area of the Washington suburbs. All through out my life I have had to deal with people treating me as if I were inferior to them. Which has severly hurt my self-esteem and self worth. I am engaged to an african american man whose family hates me simply because they think Im white.... It's very strange how people seem to jumble things around to seem like hispanic don't really belong anywhere except as maids or cooks. It seems as though the whites push us away saying we're not good enough and the blacks say the same. I've recently come to the conclusion that it's not just one group that is prejudice it comes from many directions. I may be young(21) and maybe I don't know all, but I do know that people need to stop the hate...where is it getting us?..nowhere. I am a junior at a nearby university studying to become a psychologist.. and yet people treat me as if I just crossed the Rio Grande like Im no good. I'm not prejudice against anybody except for prejudice itself and find it very sad to see the world can't seem to get over very minor differences.

As a first-year law student at a majority white law school, and coping with an environment that is pervasively racist-- students and some professors-- who make comments regarding the rationale behind the common law's failure to hold the father's of illegitimate children liable for child support-- in the South of the 60's and 70's, purportedly because most of the illegitimate children were black, and many of the fathers were white-- and this was in a contracts class mind you-- while discussing moral consideration, etc. I'm glad I found this page--inspiration.

Just wanted to let you know I appreciate reading the perspective of one who has been through this experience. As some one who is biracial and was also cross-racially adopted, I believe it is important for our own experiences with this to be voiced. I am currently pursuing a Ph.D. and will be researching outcomes of cross-race adoption among biracial (black-white) adults. This issue is growing in relevance, as it is impacting a greater number of children. I enjoyed reading your thoughts. Thanks! Gina Miranda

I was looking up racism on the internet for an english paper. We were able to chose our own topic. I chose racism because I am white and my boyfriend is black and my grandparents are very racist. They basically disowned me when they found out! I think racism is a terrible thing and I'm hoping through writing this paper I can somehow maybe change my grandparents minds. This site looks very interesting and I think it will be able to help me a lot in writing my paper. I'm looking forward to getting more information. Thank-you! Macaella

I am doing a feasibility study for an Adolescent Law Fellowship & Clinical Practice on behalf of Cincinnati Children's Hospital, Division of Adolescent Medicine. The Fellowship's mission is to educate professionals representing adolescents on how to resolve legal disputes through interdisciplinary collaboration. Fellowship goals are as follows: 1. Make high quality legal representation more accessible and affordable to youth and their families. 2. Empower professionals working with adolescents with comfort and ability to use the legal system for the benefit of their clients. 3. Educate adolescents about their rights so that they are prepared to enter adulthood as empowered citizens, capable of asserting their rights effectively. Would you share your experience and consider these questions? A. Are your law students and recent graduates interested in a 3-, 6-, or 12-month paid experience in a multi-disciplinary adolescent clinic at Cincinnati Children's Hospital? B. What would make this fellowship attractive to your students? C. What learning objectives should an Adolescent Law Fellowship and Clinical Practice accomplish? Your web-site is engaging. Please share some of your creative thinking in response to the questions.

Actually, I found this site through the African American Web Ring. Anyway, being from a mental health background and have spended a lot of my career paying rent and putting food on the table by this means, I find your site absolutely essential. For anyone to be in opposition of what you present here, they need to be in treatment. Sadly many Blacks and others do not understand that stereotypes are generally the result of racism. These stereotypings are acted upon by those who hold the most power to oppress the lesser powerful members of the group. And if the members of that lesser power group have characteristics that is clearly different (such as being Black in lieu of being White), than the dominate group many times use that difference to make the lesser group appear to be a negative entity through sterotyping. Oh,I know I am just being silly, there is no racism in America, just ask Clarence Thomas and that person's who entry came just before me in this guestbook. Oh my, did I just stereotype someone just to place myself in a seemingly superior position.

Mr. Hartmann, I read your paper on affirmative action and agree in part but disagree in others. I myself am part Italian, part Native American, and part Hispanic and would love it if the racism stopped! The truth is that even if we get the United Stated government to revoke affirmative action, there are still alot of racist people in the world, unfortunatley, most of them are white and if less and less minorities are hired in the future, then we would have another American Revolution. I am one who believes that a person should be hired for his/her brain, not their race but as a person who has been turned away from jobs, asked to leave from expensive restaraunts, and told by an real estate agent that "why don't I show you something a little more you", I'm afraid that the need for affirmative action is still needed. I know that it not fair for all white people to suffer for the ignorance and stupidity of just a few, but until there is no racism, what can we really do to make the world color-blind? I just wanted to let you know that I understand you and I agree with you but unfortunatley racism still exists. I know that people should not generalize and say that all white people are racist because they are not all that way, I know, my girlfriend is white and so are alot of my friends and family (if you consider Italian white). Hang in there, someday the world will be fair!

Some students in my lab doing research on racial bias put a link to your
course and web-site.  I really like what you are doing and look forward to
looking up some of the references in your syllabus. I am also teaching a course next semester on Understanding Diversity inPeople: Applications from Psychology which addresses some of the same issue.   Hope you don't mind the link.

If you want to see their site it is: Racial Bias: A World of Racism and Sexism.

Michael Angelo Campos Location: Los Angeles, California Sign time: 1998-10-28 10:52:36 Comments: Mr.

Comments: I am currently in a summer fellowship called PPIA or Public Policy and International Affairs at the University of Washington. One of our courses is about ethnic and racial descrimination in U.S. Public Policy. I was searching for information on racism and i found this web-site. It was very informative and extrmemely thought provoking. My congratulations.

Comments: I was just reading the web page and i found something intersting under the religion section of the page. You referred to God as a "she", and I thought that was kind of cool. Many people that I know refer to God as a "he", but I guess God is just an "it". A spirit that created our lives and influences us daily. Best of luck with your spirituality and web page. I enjoyed it.

Comments: I was searching the net looking for organizations that address issues related to the K-12 public school education of African American children. Your site came up in my search. As a resident of the District of Columbia, I've watched the parade of Superintendents and listened to the mandates of the control board--all made in the name of helping the students. By most test indicators, however, the children of this troubled school system are not faring well. The District's public schools service a majority of the poor, minority kids (as in most urban districts). I work with a non-profit organization that promotes mathematics, science and technology education reform for ALL students in the public schools across the nation. In my work I've noticed that input from people of color is minimal--almost nonexistent. Those who are present are lone voices. Another of my observations is that "the squeaky wheel gets the oil". Our community doesn't squeak, squeal or even peep when it comes to something as important as the education of our children. We do not demand adequate facilities or teaching resources, such as internet access and up-to-date textbooks. Many of us do not seem to realize the effect that a poor education will have on our children. The US Dept. of Labor, Bureau of Labor found that 38.2% of 20-24 year olds without a high school diploma were unemployed in 1996, whereas 6% of 20-24 year olds with a Bachelor's Degree were unemployed. The majority of jobs in the upcoming century will be technological in nature and in order for our children to compete, they must be educated-- with a bent towards mathematics and science. Some of our young brothers and sisters mistakenly believe that just because they study math and science that somehow this translates into a "white thing". What they fail to realize is that NOT studying these subjects deprives our community of the much needed technical expertise that could counter the effects of the conspiracies (like AIDS) that many in our community espouse. There must be doctors, lawyers, scientists, engineers, teachers, computer scientists, and a host of other professionals in our communities to represent and promote our interests. I could go on, but... I will spend some time reading the legal issues that you've outlined on the site. I'm particularly interested in the legislation surrounding the desegregation of public schools. No doubt there are some lessons there for people, like me, who are products of integrated schools. I spent most of my time dreaming of the day that I would attend a HBCU, where's the value? Anyway, if you have any links to organizations that are discussing and creating an action plan to safeguard the education of African American youths, I would certainly appreciate that information.

I want to make a difference one day as a woman in the law profession. I am only sorry that since I graduate this spring, I have not had the opportunity to have a class taught by you. I only wish more people in this world were like you; care like you; share like you; inspire like you. By the way, I heard you on 92.1 about a month or so ago in the a.m.---you read the "captain of my soul" poem. You are a rare gem! Thank you. What you do--who you are--is a necessity in this world.

A quality site prescribed by Dr. Webster
For June 20, 1997
Our other prescription for today is Vernellia Randall's Homepage, an eclectic collection of poetry, music, essays and the musing of one African American woman on race, gender, health care, law, and legal education. This info-packed site, by a University of Dayton law professor, is intended ``to provide insight and education to non-blacks on issues of important to the black community.'' The site offers resource pages on such important topics as ``Race and Racism in American Law'' and ``Race, Health Care and Law'' and much more. Two fascinating women: two great Web sites. Check `em out!
Critical Mass Award
July, 1997
Congratulations!!......Your site definitely qualifies for the "Critical Mass Award". A *very* nice site, excellent design, beautiful graphics and your information is presented well and easy to access. A *worthy* enterprise and a positive contribution to the Web. Thanks for helping make the Web a more interesting, fun and attractive place to visit. I *really* enjoyed my visit to your site and will return again when time permits :)
The Winds of Change Award for Humanitarian Service to the Internet . . [L]et me congratulate you for a very wonderful site. I believe we must use the Internet to educate, and I, for one, appreciate what you have given us. I'd like to award your site with the Humanitarian Award. . . Thank you for all that you do, you are an admirable woman/human,
Gazoo's Gold Medal Award!! Your site made me say 'whoa!'... for reasons even I am not sure of. . . .I enjoyed viewing your pages, and I believe your site is wonderful, because of the content. But... your site DID make me say 'whoa'.. and that IS the criteria for my highest award. I never give this award lightly, this is my 'creme de la creme' award. But, in the midst of all my 'whoa's'.. I have managed to attach it to this note, for you. Excellent job!
Wed Community Development Award
Sept. 1, 1997
You site received a 3 for 3 vote, which means it exceeded our expectations. We found you site to be very informative for both black and non-black readers. Your site was found easy to navigate, and gave the reader options to skip to areas of immediate interest to them. The content is well thought out, and certainly contributes to the educational experience of views. There were a few links that are out of date (expired) but not enough to frustrate the reader. . . Congratulations on a job well done. Please keep up the excellent contribution. It is people like you who make the Internet an enjoyable and educational experience!!
