Music Therapy Major

Music Biography

    Being involved in music is one of the most amazing things that I have ever done with my life.  I began to play the piano in kindergarten and would sit with my father on the music bench and play duets with him.  I loved it.  I started another instrument when I began my fourth grade of middle school. Clarinet became my life.  I started to play in the junior high band half way through my second semester of my forth grade year.  I played with the high school band to fill in empty clarinet chairs, and I loved it.  When I began high school at Central Catholic I began to play in the Jazz band.  This was very different from anything I had ever done before, being classically trained for five years, jazz was quite a bit different!  I loved jazz, and that summer I was a featured soloist in our jazz band.  We traveled throughout Europe that year. 

    I performed in the top honors band at Southern Illinois University my sophomore and junior year.   I also played in all district band my sophomore through senior year.  I played with the Bloomington/Normal Youth Symphony Orchestra my junior and senior year, and was a featured soloist my junior year.  I received a best in room award my senior year for Illinois Music Educator's Association (IMEA) playing the Clarinet Concerto No. 1 by Carl Marie Von Weber.

What My Plans for the Future Are

    In the future, I hope to do my Practicums and decide which path of music therapy I would like to do an internship with.  As of right now, my plan is to do an internship in some kind of Psychiatric Ward.  I want to help people who have mental illness to be able to express their emotions through music.  I want to be able to make people who suffer with Depression, Schizophrenia, and other illnesses feel better about themselves and help them deal with the fact that they can get better.
