Catalog Description:
The nature of management is examined from a theoretical and practical perspective in a variety of sport settings. Managerial functions and skills are the focus of study in this course.

Course Objectives
The student will obtain:

 Knowledge:

                    1. Augment awareness as to the nature of various careers within the
                        sport management field, and the importance of developing ones?
                        management skills, i.e., technical, human, conceptual and
                        personal.

                    2. Gain an understanding of management processes and their
                        universal nature.

                    3.  Expand cognizance of sport marketing processes including
                         needs assessment research, public relations, promotional tools
                         and schemes, and fund raising.

                    4.  Identify trends, current events, and innovations within the sport
                         and fitness world, and how they impact upon managerial
                         decision processes.

                    5.  Cultivate and understanding of sport sociology, psychology,
                         and philosophy and their bearing upon sport and fitness
                         management.

                    6.  Develop comprehension of management/leadership theory
                         (including key individuals responsible for these theories) and
                         how it has evolved.

                    7.  Gain an understanding of organizational behavior and basic
                         motivational theories.

                    8.  Know the different professional organizations which govern
                         various segments of the sport management field.

Comprehension:
                    1.   Summarize basic managerial roles and styles.

                    2.   Trace the sport/fitness marketing process.

                    3.   Summarize the principles of managerial skills including technical,
                          human, conceptual, and personal.

                    4.   Compare the typology of organizations.

                    5.   Explain the important primary responsibilities of managers.

Application:
                    1. Apply research techniques to the assessments and targeting.

                    2. Complete a promotional scheme.

                    3. Participate with members of the class by creating a media
                         campaign including advertisements and generating exposure.

                    4. Participate in class discussions concerning timely topics.

                    5. Discuss the evolution of management and leadership theory.

Analysis:
                    1.  Evaluate the different sports and fitness trends and the
                         implication to sport management.

                    2.  Differentiate between different theories on organizational
                         behavior and employee motivation.
 Synthesis:
                    1.  Improve communication skills through written
                         assignments, oral presentations, and class discussions.

                    2   Develop ability to work with others toward the
                         accomplishment of common goals.

                    3. Foster creative and planning abilities.

 Evaluation:
                   1.  Evaluate the various levels of sport sociology, psychology and
                        philosophy and their bearing upon sport management.

                   2.  Compare and contrast the different types of media relations,
                       advertisements and public relations activities.

                   3.  Evaluate the notion of equifinality, i.e., there is no ?best? way to
                       manage an organization and, in fact, employment of different
                       processes may be utilized to achieve identical results.

Attendance Policy:

Students are expected to attend and participate in class discussions and activities. Students who are excused from class meetings or activities are responsible for making arrangements with the professor to make up their work.

Provisions for Students with special needs:

Any student requiring extra time or help with assignments or class work should speak directly with the professor during the first full week of class. (Do not wait till the assignments are past due to ask for provisions or accommodations to be made.)

Racing Project + Manual of event 250 points
Final Exam 100 points
Chapter Expert 50 points
Total  1000 points

General Rule: Make-ups will not be given and all materials handed in late will be subject to a penalty of 50% of points for each day assignment is overdue.

Exception to General Rule: In the case of documented illness or personal emergency.
